How to Lose Weight

lose weight
Donovan Baldwin asked:

My original title for this article was going to be “How to Lose Weight in a Safe and Healthy Manner”. I decided not to as I have found that most people I meet who want to lose weight tend to pay very little attention to, or lacked awareness of, the overall effects on health that most popular weight loss solutions may have. As with so many things, most people are focused on finding some simple, immediate, and relatively painless solution to our problem.

This attitude is what keeps an entire industry of fad diets, weight loss supplements, and diet pills afloat. One sad aspect of this is that most of these weight loss solutions either have a minimal effect on the problem for most people, or have no effect at all. Since most people seeking to lose weight are driven by hope, rather than knowledge, as they try one product or diet after another, not only do they fail to lose weight, but they begin to lose hope as well.

Sadder still is the fact that, in many instances, not only do the pills and promises fail to deliver, but may actually affect health in a negative way! When you consider that one major reason to lose weight is to acquire better health, to find yourself going in the opposite direction can be devastating. Yet, as hope springs eternal, the individual continues to place trust, and money, in the next fad diet, the next diet pill, the next weight loss supplement.

Perhaps saddest of all is the fact that healthy, permanent weight loss is simple to attain, and there is often no need to invest any money at all!

Still another sad fact to consider is that even though permanent and healthy weight loss is simple to achieve (and I did not say “immediate” or “easy”) most people who fail under any weight loss plan will do so simply because of a combination of unrealistic expectations and a lack of the basic knowledge of how their body works.

Unrealistic expectations and lack of knowledge are the two main reasons that people turn to diet pills, fad diets, weight loss supplements and other purveyors of false hope.

The basic weight loss equation is:

More calories in than used = Weight gain

More calories used than taken in = weight loss

Most diet pills, and other weight loss supplements “work” by causing either more calories to be burned, or by causing fewer calories to be taken in. In other words, they either “rev up” the metabolism, at least temporarily, or they suppress the appetite. Some act to interfere with body’s ability to absorb fats.

Most diets, fad or otherwise, act on the assumption that merely decreasing the calories you eat will cause you to lose weight. Some add the idea that certain foods will contribute to the weight loss process by filling you up, providing fewer calories than other foods, or by stimulating your basic metabolic rate in order to burn more calories.

Almost all of these diets and products will commonly include a remark or warning that the product or plan will work best, or only work at all, when combined with regular exercise and sensible eating habits.

Now, there are many reasons why diets don’t work, and that discussion is too long to go into here. I have written several articles on this subject, and they can be found on many sites around the Internet, including my own. One major fact to remember about diets is that once you cut your calories to a low enough level to produce a weight loss, your body is going to reduce its basic metabolism so that you will simply establish a new point at which your weight will be maintained. This normally occurs after only a few pounds are lost, so, in order to lose more weight, you have to cut your calorie intake farther.

When the time comes that you “fall off the wagon” and go back to eating the way you did before the diet, your body needs fewer calories to function, so even more calories get stored as fat.

Diet pills (generally appetite suppressants) and other weight loss supplements, which all work by altering the normal functions of the digestive system, merely relieve you of taking responsibility for eating properly, may cause health issues, and will usually stop being effective the moment you quit taking them.

Neither method, diet pill or diet, improves health, or teaches and encourages a healthy lifestyle in which weight loss and weight management is a normal byproduct. Even when, per the instructions that come with the products, they are used concurrently with regular exercise and othter healthy living eating decisions, they can only contribute a minor portion of the overall weight loss. The actual weight loss process is carried by the exercise and sensible eating, while the pills and potions just help.

Additionally, whether a diet pill which obstructs or alters the normal function of the body, or a diet which curtails the ingestion of the broad range of nutrients necessary for a healthy body and mind, interfering with the normal nutritional needs of a healthy body is, almost by definition…unhealthy.

Since the purpose of weight loss should at least partly be to be healthy, incorporating some moderate, regular exercise into one’s life while taking the initiative to eat more sensibly, the two steps that are the most effective weight loss tips around, should be the basis for any weight loss program. In fact, regular exercise and sensible nutritional decisions will completely negate the need for weight loss supplements, diet pills, or fad diets. The person who opts for a lifestyle in which these two issues are given importance…and are acted upon…will learn that they have uncovered a genuine secret of how to lose weight.

How to Lose Weight Naturally

Travis Van Slooten asked:

Focusing on a comprehensive, long-term plan for weight loss is the best approach if you want to know how to lose weight naturally. Those extra pounds did not appear overnight and they will not disappear overnight either. While there is no shortage of “overnight” diet plans that never seem to work, the reality is losing weight naturally requires time, work, and effort! The good news is, once you’ve learned how to lose weight naturally, you’ll get maximum, long-lasting results!
If you want to learn how to lose weight naturally, you need to have a comprehensive weight loss plan that consists of a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise. Your weight loss plan should also consist of the following:
1. Daily commitment
2. Carefully selected nutritional supplements
3. Support from friends and family members
4. Adequate sleep
Daily Commitment
Setting weight loss goals and committing to them on a daily basis are critical if you want to learn how to lose weight naturally. If you have tried to lose weight before and failed, chances are you didn’t have specific weight loss goals other than to lose “X amount” of weight. Having daily goals and committing them to paper gives you something to shoot for and will dramatically improve your odds of attaining your weight loss goals.
Nutritional Supplements
Proper nutrition and regular exercise are the only components required to improve strength and performance, build more muscle and lose weight. Why then am I recommending nutritional supplements when you are trying to learn how to lose weight naturally? The truth is, there are a handful of nutritional supplements (when combined with proper nutrition and regular exercise) that can be very effective in helping you reach your weight loss goals. Specific examples would include whey protein powders, vitamins, minerals, and even some popular supplements such as hoodia gordonii.
Support from Friends and Family
Getting weight loss support from friends and family (and professionals if necessary) is important if you want to learn how to lose weight naturally. You need to let those close to you know that you are embarking on a dramatic but exciting challenge. They need to know how important this change is to you and that you need them in your corner to help you achieve your weight loss goals. If you keep them in the dark, they may unknowingly jeopardize your weight loss goals (like entice you with a deep dish pizza).
Adequate Sleep
Learning how to lose weight naturally must include understanding the importance of getting adequate sleep. Sleep deprivation can wreak havoc on your weight loss efforts. You need muscle to burn fat. Your muscles repair themselves from exercising and actually do the growing when you sleep! If you don’t get enough sleep, you limit your ability to repair and build muscle and therefore you limit your ability to burn fat. In addition, lack of sleep will result in less energy to exercise and lack of mental focus to follow your goals.
There you have it. You need to master six things to learn how to lose weight naturally: healthy diet, regular exercise, daily commitment, nutritional supplements, support from friends and family, and adequate sleep. This comprehensive approach to natural weight loss requires time and effort, but you’ll be pleased with the end results. You’ll not only lose the weight you desire, but you’ll keep it off too!

Why Can\’t I Lose Weight? 3 Possible Reasons

lose weight
Kathryn Oneill asked:

Why can’t I lose weight?
That’s the question many people ask when their weight loss plan isn’t working.
Asking yourself ‘Why can’t I lose weight?’ is actually one of the best things you can do for yourself. It says you know that what you’re currently doing isn’t working for you.
You’re at the place where you’re ready to look at alternatives – try something different to get a result you want.
So why can’t you lose weight? Here are 3 possible reasons you may not be losing weight – and some suggestions on what you can do about it.
1) Medical Reasons
Now this is not the same as saying you’re genetically programmed to be overweight. That is hogwash. In fact scientists estimate that even if you do have a genetic propensity to gain weight, your genes only account for 15 – 25% of your current weight. So forget the genetics excuse.
But there are medical reasons that some people can’t lose weight. Low thyroid, adrenal exhaustion, insulin resistance and other medical conditions can make losing weight near to impossible.
That’s why before starting any weight loss plan, you should talk to your doctor first. Have a full workup and make sure that you don’t have any health issues standing in the way of your weight loss.
There’s nothing more frustrating that trying to lose weight, doing all the right things and not losing an inch – all because of a medical condition. Get the medical condition cleared up first and then address the weight (in fact, the weight may just go down on it’s own once you get the medical condition addressed).
2) Emotional Eating
I recently read an article where a nutritionist estimated that 75% of overeating was due to emotions. 75%! Can you imagine what would happen if you learned to eliminate emotional eating and cut out all those calories? What a weight loss impact! The weight would be falling off.
Unfortunately, in today’s world, emotional eating is on the rise. Most people today are feeling the pressure of an increasingly hectic lifestyle. We hardly have time to tie our shoes, never mind deal with our emotions.
Because of this, our emotions get stuffed down and ignored until finally they explode and we’re face-down in a bowl of Rocky-Road ice cream with extra chocolate sauce.
Here’s the bottom line: you are human and you have emotions. Your emotional needs are important and need to be addressed properly with love. You need emotional nurturing and proper emotional care.
If that means you take a 5 minute break every few hours at work to regain your emotional balance, do it. If that means you need to unwind by doing a mall walk and window shopping after work – don’t let anything stop you.
Learn to nurture your emotional health and you’ll nip emotional eating in the bud – and start losing weight FAST.
3) Mismatched Weight Loss Plan
There are many different ways to lose weight and dozens of weight loss programs to choose from. Some plans emphasize a change in diet, others emphasize a change in exercise, others focus on the inner reasons for overeating.
Every person is different and will lose weight in their own unique way. If what you’re doing now isn’t currently working, it may be a simple case of personality-plan mismatch.
Maybe instead of a diet-focused weight loss plan, you would feel better with a fitness-focused weight loss plan or a psychological weight loss plan. There are lots of plans to choose from and you deserve to take your time and find one that fits your personality and lifestyle best.
If you think this is the case, take some time to review different diet or weight loss plans. Find one that you can get excited about, one that makes sense to you and that fits your belief system and personality. That’s when you’ll make real weight loss progress!
So those are 3 possible reasons for your weight loss plateau. You don’t have to stay stuck in a weight loss rut. You don’t have to keep asking yourself the frustrating question: Why Can’t I Lose Weight?’ Keep believing in yourself and in your dreams. Don’t give up and you will get there!

Losing Weight the Simple Way

lose weight
Terry Sandhu asked:

We make losing weight so hard for ourselves. However we are not entirely to blame for this situation. There is so much contrasting information regarding weight loss, that it is easy to lose track of what is actually going to work.

These three factors will help you to lose weight. So why is it that so many people find it so hard to lose weight? One of the major problems is that if we behave in a certain way for a certain length of time, then those behaviours become habits. Habits can be notoriously difficult to break.

Any type of lifestyle regardless whether it is good or bad will become a habit. In order to change that habit you must work on it, not just with physical changes, but more importantly you must work on it with mental changes. Anything that you achieve or want to achieve first begins as a desire in your mind. Your mind creates your reality, look around your room and you will realise that everything you see first started off as a desire and idea in somebody’s brain. Add vision and action to your desires and you have a blueprint of success.

Just the desire to lose weight does not guarantee weight loss,I have desires but nothing will come of them unless I take action. If it was then nobody would have issues with weight. If you want to lose weight you would normally follow this pattern. You start changing your diet and you become more active through exercise or other means. Things go well for a time and you may even think that it’s working. Then things start getting a little harder, you begin to find it more and more difficult to stick to your weight loss plan.

Eventually it gets so hard that you give up and sink back into your old habits. This is a common problem for many people who want to lose weight. There are mainly two reasons as to why this happens. The first reason is that too many people rush into losing weight by trying to lose too much too quickly. They do this by making too many sudden changes to their diet, and try to do more exercise than their bodies can handle at that time. Your body will help you change as long as you don’t try to put too much pressure on it.

If you try to impose too many changes in large steps, then your body will fight you. Every part of you will start to rebel against what you are trying to do. It is neccessary to make changes in small steps if you want to succeed in changing your behaviours. This is the only way that you will successfully lose weight in the long term. It takes time for the human body to change, time for it to move away from what it is, to become something different.

Think of it this way; you need to wean a baby off milk to introduce it solid foods; you don’t start stuffing food into the baby’s mouth out of the blue. A drug addict has to be weaned off drugs, an addicts body would find it extremely difficult to stop straight away. It takes years for top athletes to prepare their bodies so they can compete at the highest levels; you are not going to be able to tackle a marathon after a couple of weeks of jogging.

Too many people set goals within a short time frame, this is not only unrealistic,it is a recipe for failure. It took time for their bodies to become overweight, so it’s logical to expect that it will take time to lose that weight. The second reason why so many people fail to lose weight is because they don’t change the way that they think, when they are trying to lose weight. They cannot stop thinking of themselves as anything but fat.

This way of thinking does not match the changes that you trying to make physically. You need to start thinking of yourself as a person that can easily lose weight.

It doesn’t matter what your eyes tell you, but it does matter what your mind tells you. If you keep telling yourself that weight loss is really hard, and that you don’t like exercise, or that you don’t have the willpower, what do you think is going to happen? You are telling you brain that weight loss is unschievable for you. If your brain thinks it cannot do something,it stands to reason that you won’t be successful?

You need to start sending different messages to your mind, you need to start telling yourself that weight loss is easy, tell yourself that you can easily change your eating habits, that you enjoy the challenge of exercise, and that you will have no problems of reaching your weight loss goals. Tell yourself this several times a day, everyday. Whether you believe what you are saying is irrelevant in the begining. We all know the adage that if you tell a child that he or she is stupid often enough, it is only a matter of time before that child starts to believe it. Sooner rather than later these messages will start to become facts in your mind.

If your brain believes something to be true, then it actually becomes your reality. So many of us underestimate how powerful our minds are regardless if the mind focuses on the negative or the positive.

Give it a go for a few days,it doesn’t take long, and see if you spot any changes in your thinking,no matter how small? If it doesn’t work for you then it has not cost you anything, but just think if it does work, you will be well on your way to successfully losing weight.
