How Do I set up the Netgear WGR614 wireless internet router with my pc if i have a cable modem???????? Do I have to get rid of the modem for my cable internet or what is there a way i can hook this router up with out getting rid of anything?

I have a RCA DCM425 Cable Modem, & a Netgear Wirless/Wire Router. I’ve tried every thing to try to hook my new labtop up to the router but it says it connects but nothing happens. I even tried the Wireless part of the router through my Labtop but still nothing it wouldn’t receive any thing it would sent but just not receive.
