Question by Melissa: Best flea treatment for dogs?
We take our dogs to Banfield in Pets Smart and they gave us First Shield flea treatment and for the first two weeks we didn’t see any fleas on them, and now they are covered again. (adults and babies) They told us it is the best and kills the fleas by simply jumping on them, unlike the others that the fleas must bite them to die. (that’s all they carry now) We tried Advantage before and it didn’t work worth a crap.
We have have treated our yard and had an exterminator treat our house but we can’t seem to get rid of the fleas on the dogs! All we keep hearing is “It’s just a bad year for fleas”! PLEASE HELP!!
What has worked best on your dogs?
We applied Advantage once a month for three months and they still had fleas. I can read the instructions, thank you. It just simply didn’t work
*sigh*.. Ashley, what are you babbling about?

Vectra is what we use. First you use Capstar (think that is right) to kill off the fleas then Vectra really seems to help my dog more than anything else. Advantage and Frontline do not work atleast not around here. Honestly never heard of the first shield flea treatment, sounds more like something like capstar where you would have to still follow up with a preventative (like the Vectra).

Question by Michelle: What else can I do for my dogs fleas?
I gave him a treatment to which he had a terrible reaction. He started to bite himself and pull out his fur. I then bathed him with Dawn dishwashing soap and that seemed to help with the biting, itching and pulling fur, but it didn’t get rid of the fleas. I bought some diatomaceous earth, but I’m not really sure how to use it properly – I sprinkled some on him, but his fur is thick and it’s hard to get it down to the skin. I’ve also been putting brewer’s yeast on his food. He LOVES it, but he still digs and scratches and bites himself. Now I’m finding flea “dirt” all over – so it seems they’re getting worse. My cat (who is an indoor cat) now has them too…….AHHHHH – what do I do??? Please help!! (can’t really afford to take them both to the vet….)

Michelle, you have to break the egg cycle. Which is hard to do. You need to concentrate on the areas where they sleep. It does no good to wash and dust your animals, if they are going back to sleep in eggs.
I am not sure Dawn soap is a good idea either, this will dry out your dogs skin and make things worse

looking for home remedies for fleas off dogs to relieve their itching. . Thank you
Most of them are under neath my dogs paws are little bugs, im not too sure what they are but i think they could be ticks because i pluck them off, i squished them and there was blood. When my dog was sleeping on my bed there were little black tiny looking bugs and when i squished it, it looked like blood and im not sure if they are ticks. Does anyone know what they are and how to get rid of them?
My dog has ticks and i keep washing her and they go away for a little bit but then they come back. How can you get rid of ticks in the yard?
i have 5 dogs and kids. 3 of the dogs are pits and only the pits are getting ticks the other 2 are not. i dont want to use anything that can harm the kids and dogs.
How to get rid of the ticks? I am using Frontline and my dogs are still covered with thicks.I also keep spraying my yard, but nothing is working.
Ticks are really bad this year in our region and they’ve made their way into our yard on onto us and our dogs. What’s the best method for killing ticks in the yard?
I did read that you could dust the yard and gardens with lime, but that raised soil pH and we already have very alkaline soil, so adding lime would be a bad thing.
