I need to make a network that can be detected by a labtop without being hook up to the labtop. Never done this before. Wi-Fi is it? I have no idea.

ok, buy a router.
now, plug one end of the ethernet cable(looks sorta like a big phone cable) into the modem, and the other end into the port on the router that looks a little different than the others. If you have a computer that was directly connected to the modem, just plug a separate ethernet cable from one of the remaining ports on the router into the computer.
Hey there….
What you are looking to do is set up what is called a wi-fi connection (that’s the name for it). How this works, is you run a standard cable connection from your cable modem to the router. Then after the router is turned on (hopefully you still have a comp that has a standard network connection) you go into the network settings for the router through Internet Explorer (your manual for the router should explain how). Turn on the wireless function, and name your network. Then get onto your laptop (in the same room with the router to start) and set up the wi-fi connect and make sure it works properly. Then move the laptop to where you want to be using it. If it still works well, then you go back into your router settings and set the security protocols (this will prevent others from using your internet wi-fi connections just by being within 100 ft of your home).
All Done!
Search pcmag online. They have tons of networking information.
Someone can sit outside your house with a laptop and logon to your network and with a laptop and a wifi card and access you files.
