How to get a one year old dog used to gun shots and being off leash so I can take it hunting?

how to
www.accidentawardslasvegas.com asked:

Adopted a one year old dog from the pound to replace my last dog, which ran away in the wilderness when I took it hunting. How can I train this new dog to be used to gunshots and to not run away?
The dog is a German Shepherd if that matters. The exact age is between 1 and 1.5 years old if that matters. The dog is very friendly, but may have been abused by its former owners as it gets really afraid if someone around it gets upset.

My dad and I used to train our labs for bird hunting when I was younger. We never had too many issues with dogs running away, but some would get a little frightened the first time. Try using a leash when training. If you can find some land that will allow to shoot without actually hunting, you can train and train and train. What breed of dog did you adopt? With even a dog at the age of one, most are still puppies and trainable, but it will be harder than if you had the dog as a young puppy. Exposure at a young age definitely helps with hunting dogs, but it’s not impossible. I would try the leash out since the dog wont be able to take off. Hope this helps. If not, I am sure there are other methods.
