How do you ask someone to stop trying to teach you?

how to
Josh asked:

If I ask my coworker to do something within his area of responsibility, he instead wants to show me how to do it. I don’t mind learning and growing, but sometimes I just need him to do his part so that I can do my part. I can take time to learn things later.

Print this letter out which you posted and hand it to him over coffee and discuss it. calmly

Firmly say…”Aw…no thank you…I’ve got plenty to do…I don’t want to be TAUGHT how to do it..I’d like YOU to do it…thanks!”

If it’s not in your field, don’t stress over it. Tell him to do it, take charge. Just let him know that everyone has to do their part in their OWN field in order for the team of employees to work efficiently. If he tries to teach you just simply say “No, thanks,” and walk away. He should get the point and do it himself.

I would say you just need to explain to him that when you ask for things, you don’t always want to be taught. As kindergarten as it may sound, you have to “share your feelings”. This guy will never change unless he knows he’s doing something bothersome. Good luck, I hope you get the message across.
