Do I have to keep my PC to add a wireless router to my cable modem for my laptop?

Julie D asked:

I already have a PC and cable modem (Charter). I just bought a laptop. Can I hook up a wireless router directly to the modem to provide wireless access for my laptop… or do I still have to have a hardline from the router to my old PC?

no, once the modem and routher have been configured by the hard wired pc, thats it. you can disconnect the hard line pc.

    Typical setup:
Modem connected to the wireless router
PC connected directly to the wireless router via cable
    Laptop connected through wireless

This is the recommended setup for two main reasons. You have to configure your wireless settings while hard wired. You can’t make changes very easily if it isn’t hard wired because if you are connected thru wireless when you make change you are disconnected. The other reason: Wireless is less accurate and less reliable connection. Also typically much less secure for home connections.
BTW use at least WPA or WPA2. Do not use WEP

Something to watch for, ensure your cable modem is truly a cable modem and not a router. Otherwise you need to call the cable company to have them help you convert it to a bridge.

    Good luck

No you do not. You will only need the wired PC to initially configure the router, once done you can disconnect and power off that pc and live without wires. :)
