Can I hook up a DSL modem to a stand-alone PC without it conflicting with a wireless router in another room?

corkinspiffy asked:

I just hooked up a Verizon wireless system in the house. I took my “old” Westell 6100 modem and put it with the kids’ computer (no wifi capabilities). The wireless modem works great until I turn on the kids’ computer, which knocks out the wifi. How do I configure the Westell to get around this? The computers are on different floors of the house, so I cannot hook up the kids’ PC to the router via an ethernet cable.

it is not possible to have 2 DSL modems and routers in your home… for 1 DSL line, there should only be 1 modem. to Split the internet connection, you will need a DSL switch or a router.. in this case, you already have a WiFi system from verizon so i would suggest you just get a wifi card for the old computer. you can go to best buy or any DSL store near you… try visiting this site as well…

Do you mean you put both DSL modems on the same Verizon DSL line? Then, of course it won’t work. Unlike Ethernet, DSL is point-to-point. One point is your modem, and the other is Verizon’s switch. You put two modems on one point and they fought each other.

I don’t know if your new wireless modem can act as a router. Ask Verizon rep. If it can, the solution to you is to buy a wireless PCI card and install in your kid’s PC. You should be able to get one for about (or even less than) $60.

So, both yours and your kid’s PCs talk to the wireless modem, and the modem talks over the DSL to Verizon’s switch.

As of the old modem? Sell it on EBay.
