We used normal ant killer that you can by in gardencentres. They do work, but after a couple of weeks the ants came back. i suppose it is new eggs that have hatched or a new colony. They take these back to the other ants and eventually they will go away. This works good for the ones you can't see or you miss. Fire ants, though, are not attracted to sweets, so I use black flag bug spray and go spray crazy on them. Make sure to spray around the doors and outside too where they are coming in at if you can find the spot.
