What can I use to rid ants in the yard and not affect the dogs?

get rid of ants
BlueEyes asked:

I have major ant beds in the yard where my chihuahua and others track through all day. I want to rid the ants and their beds somehow without my dog tracking it in and licking it off her paws, and then getting sick. Is there anything safe to use around dogs but will rid the ants?

How to do

Try pouring boiling water down the ant hill.
Sevin dust is a powdered pesticide that is safe enough to sprinkle on dogs to kill fleas and ticks and it also would kill the ants.
This site offers eco-friendly pesticides that are safe for humans and pets:

I would suggest using a spectracide and keep your pets off til it dries. I used it because we are having alot of bug issues and this spray kills over 110plus bugs.

I have 4 dogs and I have a pest control company come out and spray and it does not affect my dogs. Check your local yellow pages for your local pest control number.

    Hope this helps!

You may want to seriously think about calling someone that does that for a living rather than get a wrong answer here…

it is your dogs life we are talking about

When I was a kid we had ants in our house a lot, and one time, my parents bought a few canisters of grits and sprinkled them around the edges of the house where the ants were getting in. Apparently, the ants eat the grits (powdered, not cooked!) and it expands in their stomachs and they explode. I’m not sure if that’s true, but it sure cut down our ant problem!

As far as I know, grits are not toxic to dogs, although if your dog likes to eat powdered grits, they might be less effective.. ;-)

My grandpa always used to sprinkle instant grits on the mound. The ants take it inside to eat it and then in 24 hours pour boiling water over it and the grits would expand and the ants sort of pop. It worked for him might work for you too! Good luck
