Question by john b: I I need to reformat the hard drive on my old desktop Dell so I can get rid of “Bugs” and reinstall windows 98
I’ve tried just reinstalling 98, but it just goes back to same problems I had before: won’t shut itself off, won’t defrag. Reinstallation doesn’t give me the option to reformat before I reinstall. Is there another way to reformat the hard drive??
Am just trying to salvage this PC to give to a senior who can’t afford one. Don’t wish to upgrade it.

mmm, well if u have a alright computer, download linux and burn it to dvd and then install that. It will be much better than windows 98.
Windows 98 has a torrents of problems and to make it worst, Microsoft has ceased support for it. I will strongly suggest you upgrade your OS to at least Windows 2000. Get XP for the best result.
To format you computer, simply enter your Win98 installation CD into the CD-ROM. Upon starting up your system, dont forget to go into your BIOS (Hit any of the Fx keys on top of the keyboard or the DEL key). Set your boot up priority to CD-ROM. Restart your PC again and it should run from your CD. Next just choose format.
I agree with above,, but, to answer your question, wip out your disk with a good wipe program or go to your c prompt and type ” format c:” then yes to confirm…then reinstall win 98
ps. you need to make a win 98 boot disk before you wipe it out, so you can use your cd drive to load win 98
If you are able to make a “Windows 98 System Disk”, please do that. (If you don’t know how, I explained down below). It is a bootable floppy diskette that will include the utility “FDisk”. FDisk will wipe out your partition, and allow you to create a new one. The Win98 Sys Disk will also have “Format” on it as well too, so you can then re-format your hard drive.
If I remember correctly, when you boot-up from this floppy diskette, it should load the drivers so you can use your Win98 Installation CD on your CD-ROM, so from there you can laydown a new image.
Again, if I remember correctly, you create the “Windows 98 System Disk” by right clicking on the “Start” button, select “Properties”, and in one of those tabs (I believe the last one???), you should see the option to create this floppy diskette.
