You should talk to your doctor about possibilities for other treatments if what you are using isn’t working. Beware of using any products for acne unless they have been prescribed or recommended by your doctor. Often both topical and oral antibiotics are needed to treat acne, and sometimes topical benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid and/or retinoids.
People make all kinds of suggestions about the best thing to do to cure acne. Some cures I’ve heard include putting oatmeal, honey, lemon juice, tea tree oil, cucumber, vinegar, milk of magnesia or toothpaste on your face. Practically every cosmetics company and company that makes personal care products makes something that is a “sure cure” for acne. If we think about this, and use some common sense, we have to come to the conclusion that there is no quick or easy cure for acne, because if there was it would be well known and doctors would be telling everyone about it.
Numerous companies make a lot of money persuading people to buy products that at worst will make the acne worse, and at best may help some people a little. Often fewer products are better. People often make their acne much worse by using too many products. There really is no quick fix for acne. Don’t spend a lot of money on products just because their ads say that they will cure acne. Your doctor is the best person to ask for help, and he or she may recommend some prescription medication or non-prescription treatment that may be suitable for you..
There are some very simple and basic things you can do that cost nothing. Keep your face or any other area affected by acne very clean. Any mild antibacterial soap will help with that. Rinse the area well to remove all soap residue. Drink plenty of water – it really does help to clear up acne. Eat a nutritious diet and get enough sleep. A healthy life style will make a difference. Try to reduce the stress in your life – stress contributes to acne, so also probably the more you worry about the acne and focus on it, the worse it will be.
Probably the most useful and effective things you can do are to apply hot compresses to pustules and cysts and never to pick or squeeze pimples. Playing with or popping pimples, no matter how careful and clean you are, nearly always makes bumps stay redder and bumpier longer.
Here are a few informative links with additional ideas about preventing and treating acne.
Try these home remedies to get rid of acne: (They are fast and cheap):
•Wash the face twice daily with a tea of calendula officinalis,
•Mix 1 teaspoon lemon juice with 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder. Apply this paste on the pimples and wash it after 20 minutes with warm water. Repeat for two weeks,
•Use aloe vera juice on the pimples morning and night for as long as necessary (perhaps five months or longer).
•Make orange peel paste by grinding it in some water. Apply on and around pimples.
Recommendations:
•Clean gently the skin once or twice daily with an antiseptic soap or a soap compounded of sulfur. This reduces the germ count and prevents the bacterial colonization in deeper pores.
•Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. The oats and wheat bran, beans, fruits and vegetables should be increased in the diet.

There are quite a few things that you can do on a daily basis that will
help you to get rid of those annoying pimples.
Here is a short list of the most quick and easy acne
reduction suggestions:
• You must use only a chemical free skin cleansing solution, and
this is what you must clean your skin with every day. By doing
the job correctly in this way, you can effectively prevent new
skin lesions and blemishes from being formed in the first place.
In fact, cleansing your skin thoroughly but gently in this manner
is one of the most effective things you can do to move towards
having a healthy, acne free complexion. Clear Pores is a good choice.
• Do everything that you can to avoid either your hands touching
or your hair falling onto any acne affected areas of our skin. Both
your hands and your hair carry dirt and oils that can clog your pores and
encourage the bacteria that causes the acne blemishes to
develop and grow.
• I know this one is tough, but Do not scratch or pick at your acne! This will encourage the
transfer of dirt and oils into the wounds that you have irritated
or opened, and cause deeper (and often more painful)
acne lesions which are far more likely to cause scarring.
Do not be tempted to squeeze blackheads or whiteheads that
have formed as a result of your acne for exactly the same
reasons.
• Change your bedding, especially the pillow covers, every day.
There will be a residue of dirt, germs and bacteria left on your
pillow and sheets every morning, and if you do not change them,
you risk these being passed back onto your skin, blocking your
pores in the process.
• (For girls – Avoid using make-up while suffering from acne. Most commercial
make-up is made using lots of waxes and oils, and these will
naturally block the pores of your skin, making your acne
considerably worse. Furthermore, make-up may contain a
chemical substance known as benzoyl peroxide, and this is
something that can further irritate your skin (although, curiously
enough, it is used in many commercial acne treatments as well).
Using make-up when suffering from acne is just asking for
trouble, so don’t do it.

Hi Greg,
I found this info about Benzoyl peroxide and Think it may help you.
Though, acne does go away on their own after some time but quite often if it is left unattended, acne results in permanent scars. Benzoyl peroxide is a constituent compound and is found in all acne removing creams and gels.
Benzoyl peroxide functioning.
Propionibacteria acnes bacteria popularly known as P. acnes are responsible for acne. This bacterium grows in areas which are devoid of oxygen. Main function of benzoyl peroxide is to provide aerobic atmosphere which suffocates and kills this bacteria. Once the bacteria are killed the clogged pores also get open and dead cells are removed. Benzoyl peroxide is the most proven compound used for treating acne.
Care to be taken.
• Once the acne subsides don’t discontinue the treatment. Let it continue for few more days.
• Start the treatment with gels and creams having only low concentration of benzoyl peroxide, probably 2.5%. Let the skin get acclimatized to this chemical. If used in higher concentration, the gels or lotions may cause dryness of skin.
• This lotion needs to be applied on the area which is completely clean and dry.
• Benzoyl peroxide solution may result in bleaching of skin, hairs or the clothes. So while applying proper care needs to be taken to ensure one does not have to suffer later on.
• Do not only apply benzoyl peroxide to the spots which are having acne and pimples. Instead the lotion or gel needs to be applied to the whole area. This helps not only in treating the existing pimples but it also ensures that new pimples do not come out.
